Why we picked this hotel
The design is beautiful enough to be the reason to stay, but the gardens, excellent food, thoughtful service and walkable Lagos location make Casa Mãe feel especially complete.
Hotel description
Casa Mãe is a 34-room boutique hotel hidden just inside the historic walls of Lagos, spread across a restored 19th-century estate house, contemporary buildings and garden cabanas. Interiors mix vintage Portuguese furniture, locally made ceramics, traditional terracotta, natural materials and cleaner modern spaces, giving the different parts of the hotel distinct personalities. Despite its central setting, the property feels unusually spacious, with gardens, productive vegetable plots, saltwater pools, Orta restaurant, a fitness studio and a strong wellness programme. Praia da Batata, Lagos Marina and the old town are all easily walkable, so it works particularly well for travellers wanting both town and coast without relying on a car.
Hotel location

This is great
Four settings, four different moods
Contemporary rooms, garden cabanas, a restored 19th-century house and Villa Paiol each bring a distinct character to the stay.
Portuguese craft runs throughout
Algarve terracotta, solid oak furniture, ceramics, textiles and bespoke pieces made by Portuguese artisans give the interiors a strong local identity.
The gardens feed the kitchen
ORTA works directly with Casa Mãe's productive gardens and around 200 chickens, alongside seasonal ingredients from Algarve producers.
Two pools serve different rhythms
The main saltwater pool welcomes everyone, while a second saltwater pool beside the modern building is reserved for adults.
Wellness remains a serious focus
Treatments continue during the spa redevelopment, alongside a Technogym fitness studio and private yoga and Pilates programmes.
Historic Lagos begins outside
Casa Mãe sits beside the old city walls, with the historic centre immediately around it and Praia da Batata about ten minutes away on foot.
Our take on the stay
Casa Mãe isn’t just a place to stay, it feels like stepping into a creative community where everything, from the food to the ceramics, has a story.

About the destination
Lagos, Algarve
Lagos combines a lively historic centre with some of the Algarve’s most dramatic coastline, where golden cliffs frame sheltered coves and clear Atlantic waters. Inside the old town, cobbled streets lead between local restaurants, small shops, and centuries-old buildings, with the beaches close by. Casa Mãe sits just inside the historic centre, offering a peaceful retreat within easy walking distance of both town and coast.
