Why we picked this hotel
The architecture is reason enough to stay, but the heated pools, beautifully designed spa, intimate three-suite scale and reservoir setting make Fugahouse feel especially complete.
Hotel description
Fugahouse is an architect-designed three-suite retreat in the mountain village of Pretarouca, above Lamego, with views towards the Balsemão River and Serra de Montemuro. Architect Diogo Aguiar combines existing granite walls with timber, raw concrete and large panes of glass, creating a contemporary house that still feels closely tied to its rural setting. With only three suites, the shared facilities feel unusually generous: a full wellness area, heated indoor and outdoor pools, hammam, sauna, communal kitchen, terraces, bicycles and paddleboards for the nearby reservoir. Continental breakfast is available, while private chef service and meal delivery can also be arranged.
Hotel location

This is great
Ruins reworked into modern architecture
Diogo Aguiar combined surviving rural structures with granite, timber, concrete and large openings towards the surrounding landscape.
The spa became its own building
A structure originally intended for extra guestrooms was redesigned as a Nordic-inspired wellness space influenced by Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals.
Only three generous suites
The entire retreat has three suites, keeping stays intimate while allowing the whole house to be reserved for groups of up to twelve.
The indoor pool faces the valley
The glazed spa contains a heated pool and hammam, with broad views towards the water and hills outside.
Breakfast has a village connection
Housekeeper Zita prepares breakfast with local ingredients, including freshly baked cake and eggs from her own chickens.
Days extend onto the reservoir
Guests can take paddleboards onto the water below or use bicycles to explore the mountain roads and trails around Pretarouca.
Our take on the stay
The old stone buildings and the new concrete spa were deliberately left in contrast rather than made to look as though they belonged to the same era.
