Why we picked this hotel
Hospedaria turns a century-old roadside tavern into one of the eastern Algarve’s most characterful small stays, with just five suites, beautiful courtyards and a garden made for slow days.
Hotel description
Hospedaria is a five-suite rural retreat in Sítio da Cumeada, in the eastern Algarve countryside between Tavira, Cacela Velha and the Ria Formosa. The property grew from a former roadside tavern and shop first opened in 1917, restored by Atelier RUA with whitewashed walls, cane ceilings, concrete, vintage furniture and new low-rise volumes arranged around private patios and gardens. The experience is deliberately small and unhurried, centred on one outdoor pool, à la carte breakfasts, light lunches, daily fixed-menu dinners and the surrounding countryside. Private massage, yoga or Pilates, boat trips, horse riding, cycling and wine tastings can all be arranged, while the beaches of Cabanas and Cacela Velha are only a short drive away.

Hotel location

This is great
A 1917 roadside tavern reborn
Hospedaria occupies a former village shop and tavern that once served as the local post office and public telephone.
Restored by Atelier RUA
Original buildings were preserved while independent new volumes, private patios and sheltered courtyards were carefully inserted around them.
Just five individual suites
Two occupy the original buildings and three sit independently outside, giving each stay a particularly intimate, residential character.
A pool hidden in the garden
Olive trees, gravel courtyards and loungers surround the small heated pool, creating a quiet centre to days spent at the property.
Dinner around one table
Evenings revolve around a fixed Portuguese menu using seasonal regional ingredients, with dishes adapted for allergies and dietary requirements.
Wellness comes to you
Private massage, yoga and Pilates sessions can be arranged either in the guestroom or outside in the garden.
Our take on the stay
One of the suites still incorporates the old tavern oven and fireplace, a small reminder that this was a meeting place long before it became a hotel.

About the destination
Tavira, Algarve
Tavira offers a quieter side of the Algarve, with whitewashed streets, tiled façades, salt pans, and long sandy beaches reached across the Ria Formosa. Beyond the historic centre, the surrounding countryside is dotted with olive groves, orchards, and small villages close to the coast. Hospedaria sits just outside Tavira in this rural landscape, bringing a peaceful countryside feel within easy reach of town and the beaches.
