Why we picked this hotel

Thirteen independent stays are scattered through the valley rather than gathered into a hotel block, making Vale Palheiro feel more like a small hillside settlement than a conventional hotel.

Hotel description

Vale Palheiro is an earth-built retreat set within 60 hectares of secluded valley in Portugal’s Costa Vicentina, near Aljezur. Designed by architect Henrique Schreck, with interiors by ARK Studio, the property was conceived as a collection of independent stays rather than a conventional hotel. Its terracotta buildings are dispersed through the landscape, creating the feeling of a small settlement between land and sea. Traditional taipa walls and natural materials give the architecture its warm, earthy character. Days move between the valley, the pool and the Atlantic coast nearby. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at The Barn, where the kitchen draws on the garden, local producers and the seasons. Wellness da Ribeira offers massages and treatments, alongside yoga and movement sessions and a sauna. Monte Clérigo and Amoreira are around ten minutes away by car, keeping the Atlantic close while Vale Palheiro remains quietly secluded.

Hotel location

This is great

Rammed earth defines the architecture
Traditional taipa walls are paired with regional schist, clay, timber and other natural materials.

The resort unfolds across a 60-hectare valley
Buildings are dispersed across the Costa Vicentina landscape rather than gathered into a conventional hotel block.

The Barn has a remarkable ceiling
More than 8,000 small clay pieces form the restaurant's main vault, above seasonal farm-to-table cooking rooted in local ingredients.

Each stay feels architecturally individual
Casitas, suites and villas use fireplaces, terraces, vaulted ceilings, rammed-earth walls and restored elements from earlier buildings on the land.

Swimming is woven into the landscape
There is a large communal outdoor pool, while Villa Terracotta has a plunge pool and Casa Atlântica its own infinity pool.

Wellness stays deliberately intimate
Wellness da Ribeira offers massages and treatments, alongside yoga and movement sessions and a sauna.

Our take on the stay

Bring proper walking shoes. The Historical Way of the Rota Vicentina passes directly through Vale Palheiro. And the resort’s own guided trail takes guests to Monte Clérigo, a roughly 9 km walk through the Costa Vicentina landscape towards the Atlantic.

About the destination

Aljezur, Portugal

Aljezur sits between the hills and wild Atlantic coastline of Portugal’s western Algarve, surrounded by cork forests, farmland, and some of the region’s most dramatic beaches. Its whitewashed old town and nearby surf beaches offer a quieter alternative to the Algarve’s busier south coast. Vale Palheiro is set in the countryside nearby, offering a peaceful base for exploring this unspoilt corner of Portugal.
