Why we picked this hotel
The historic setting is reason enough to stay, but the heated pool, sauna, steam bath and quiet cloister make coming back after a day in Florence especially appealing.
Hotel description
Della Calza sits just inside Florence's old walls at Porta Romana, where a former monastery has been turned into a place that feels part hotel, part spa retreat and part private museum. The cloisters, vaulted spaces and Renaissance frescoes are still very much part of the experience, but the mood is quiet rather than formal, with 40 rooms looking onto a setting that feels surprisingly removed from central Florence. The spa is what changes the rhythm of the stay. There is a warm indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, snow room and treatment spaces, while the courtyard and bar make it easy to slow things down between walks through the Oltrarno. Boboli and Palazzo Pitti are around 10 to 15 minutes away on foot, so Florence is close whenever you want it, but coming back here feels like stepping somewhere much calmer.
Hotel location

This is great
A monastery transformed around wellness
The historic San Giovanni della Calza complex now combines 40 guestrooms, Renaissance art and Florence’s largest central spa.
More than 650 sqm of spa
Water, heat and relaxation unfold through a hydrotherapy pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, vitarium, snow room and sensory showers.
A 33°C wellness pool
The 9 × 4 metre indoor pool uses hydromassage jets and ergonomic seating for a deliberately slow, restorative experience.
Renaissance art within the stay
Historic frescoes and works associated with masters including Franciabigio turn parts of the former convent into an almost private museum.
A courtyard behind Porta Romana
The inner garden and porticoes bring an unusually quiet centre to a hotel still within walking distance of Boboli and Palazzo Pitti.
Wellness shapes the whole concept
Overnight stays, dining and spa access are intentionally tied together rather than operating as entirely separate parts of the property.
Our take on the stay
Franciabigio’s Last Supper is still inside the complex, so some of Florence’s Renaissance history is quite literally part of where you are staying.

About the destination
Florence
Florence is a city of Renaissance landmarks, artisan workshops, and lively piazzas, with much of its historic centre best explored on foot. South of the Arno, Oltrarno offers a more local rhythm, with gardens, traditional workshops, and quieter streets close to the city’s main sights. Della Calza SPA & Foresteria sits near Porta Romana, offering a peaceful retreat between historic Florence and the green hills beyond.
