On grand Aghmashenebeli Avenue, Unfound Door hides inside a century-old Tbilisi townhouse whose most remarkable details were only rediscovered during restoration. Painted-over frescoes, gilded ceilings and Baroque angels now sit alongside deep colour, antiques and contemporary Georgian design, giving each of the 13 rooms the feeling of a private salon rather than a standard hotel bedroom. Stay here for a more lived-in side of Tbilisi. Breakfast leads into cafés, galleries and the streets of Chugureti, while evenings can end downstairs over Georgian-European cooking and cocktails before climbing back through that extraordinary painted stairwell. Our take on the stay
The murals were not commissioned for the hotel. Some were discovered beneath layers of Soviet-era green paint during the restoration, which makes looking around the entrance hall feel a little like seeing the building being uncovered again.
